Edith Cowan, the first woman to be elected to an Australian parliament, has been honoured with a statue on St Georges Terrace in Perth. Cowan was a champion for women's rights and introduced the Women's Legal Status Bill, which opened professions to women for the first time, such as practising law. In 1921, at the age of 60, Edith Dircksey Cowan became the first woman elected to an Australian Parliament. She was a trailblazer, helping to establish the Children’s Court, the King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, and the movement to give all women the right to vote. 100 years after her election to parliament, her legacy still burns bright.
